3 Things to do after conversion to Islam (Part 1)

Someone told me that after all these years, I never changed. I’m still mean and rude with my use of words. She was right, I never changed. When I converted to Islam, it didn’t change me to the kindest person. Yet, it taught me to stop the bad things that I used to do. In Islam, we are not asked to change who we are entirely. We are asked to repent, stop doing haram, be righteous, and believe that there is only one God. Going back to my ‘being mean’ I just want to say that my words are not hurtful but they are truthful . An honest speech will always be hateful because truth hurts. Nevertheless, they are not meant to hurt the innocent. Words can be painful or beautiful not because of their sound. But because of their meaning and use. And the sharp words are a weapon to straighten the sick heart and stubborn soul. In Islam, we are not expected to be perfect and each one of us has our own phases to improve ourselves to be a better muslim. Still, that is not an excuse to neglect what...

How to be successful?

Some of us grew up with parents who nag us what’s haram and what’s halal. Some parents with an iron fist punish their children when they make mistakes, and some parents drag their children to Madrassah at a young age. Until being a Muslim becomes a burden. As a result, some of us choose to live a life without rules. Till we lose our way and live a life that is detached from our Creator . A life far away from modesty verging into nakedness. A day bombarded by music until we abandon listening to the Qur’an. Laughing with the Kaffir instead of praying in congregation with the Ummah of Muhammad. Yet Allah is the most merciful, most forgiving, and most loving. Allah will have mercy on you, though you forget about him. He will still forgive you as long as you repent to him. He will still love you even though you have disobeyed him for the sake of friendships, careers, or dreams. So, don’t lose hope in yourself, and don’t lose hope in Allah’s mercy . Purify your heart, repent to him, and run ...

How to reach your goals and succeed: with just 5 attitudes

To reach a goal and succeed, money is just a means. The right attitude is what you need. Before we tackle attitudes, first we have to set our goal or objective. Our goal should be realistic. The other day, my toddler told me he would transform into a scooter; he even said, ‘Insha Allah. Well, we all know he is not going to reach it, even if he has the right attitude, simply because his goal is unrealistic. So, set a realistic goal before anything else. Then plan and implement. 1st attitude: gratitude. Your task should always start with gratitude. Thank Allah for everything—for having the tools, materials, resources, and means to reach your goal. Alhamdulillah. Most of the people that I know who have succeeded in their careers always start with gratitude before doing their task. It is really effective, as I always do this before writing or doing anything, and I always get the result that I want.  It is important for us to take time to express gratitude to all t...

Should I let my husband marry another woman and be part of polygamy?

It was afternoon, and my husband had just finished working when I ran to him and asked him if he could marry my friend. His eyes widened in shock. It might be surprising to you—why would I run and ask my husband with haste? To make a long story short, I was scrolling on Facebook when I saw my friend's post that seemed so sad. She has been divorced twice, and I don’t want to see her sad anymore. I can’t take seeing her miserable. My husband is a good man, and I know that he can be a good husband who will love you with kindness and generosity and lead you to be a good Muslim who will please Allah. But with all this intention, there are also women who would disagree with their husband marrying another woman. And will find many excuses or drama to stop their husband. Some will be like an ulama laying all the fatwas and will have their own explanation and interpretation of the Quran and hadith. Some are knowledgeable but will let their emotions cloud their minds. And som...

Where to find spices store for Biryani in Cavite

It was an early and rainy morning when my son and I went to the Indian store. The store was still closed when we arrived, so I let my son sit on the yellow stairs of an old building near the store. He was still yawning, and his eyes were drowsy. We'd left the house too early. It took a few minutes before I saw people arriving and then sitting in front of some building next to the Indian store. We walked to the banana store and asked the seller if he knew what time the store would be open. He told me it would be open soon, as the men sitting next to the store were the crew. It took half an hour before the store opened; they open at eight in the morning. At last, we entered the store. It is small, but enough to move around and choose. There are enough crews to assist customers. The smell of the different spices is really aromatic, as I expected. The boxes of spices are piled up and organized. I spent enough on the spices and rice to last for a month. But what I can’t forget is th...

How much Mahr(dowry) should I ask?

When I got married, my husband and I were both young and still students. I only asked for a small amount for dowry, trying to please Allah and to prove to my husband that he married a simple woman who would be grateful to him and would not cause him hardship. Dowry doesn’t have a limit or minimum measure; you can ask how much you want, but it’s encouraged to reduce it to make marriage easy. If you are about to get married, your dowry will attest to your intention for this marriage. So, ask yourself, What is your intention? Are you doing it to please Allah? Don’t get me wrong; you have all your rights to ask for the amount that you want, but let’s not forget that we are here to please Allah. And if you think you will lose your share of this world if you don’t ask for a large sum of dowry, you’re wrong. If Allah does not give it to you in this world, he will surely give it to you in the next. Remember your purpose, your higher purpose, and that is to worship Allah. Don’t let your des...
